Coaches Spring League Information

All coaches must have a criminal check to coach in the SMBA. Those coaches that coached in the winter session will not have to have one completed. The fee will be covered by the SMBA. Please do not go down to the police station until you have been assigned a team or you will have to pay the cost for the check.

There will also be a coaching clinic on Sunday April 11, 2010 that will be mandatory for all coaches that do not have a course from the SMBA or NCPP to attend.
Jerseys can be picked up at the coaches meeting/clinic on April 11.

Pick up between 12 noon and 1 PM

The league will use FIBA rules with no zones or zone presses. The SMBA philosophy for the Spring League is that every player will get equal playing time. Teams must provide own basketballs.

If you need further information contact Ian Mirtle at: 382-5508 or email smba@sasktel.net

Players that are not registered with the SMBA spring league cannot play or practice with the team because of the liability insurance we have.

Jerseys can be picked up at the coaches meeting/clinic on April 11.
You can ask the players that have jerseys what their numbers are and then assign numbers to the players that are receiving new jerseys. These players can go down to Olympian Sports to have them numbered. The cost is $5 to have a number(s) placed on both sides of the reversible.

Please make sure the players have the jersey crested for the first game on April 21 (THIS MUST BE COMPLETED).

Coaches are reminded that if they are under 18 years of age they must have an adult supervisor with them at all practices and games.

DURING GAMES:
Coaches are reminded that these are to be serious games. Last year we had a problem with one team that decided to just “fool around”. This will not be tolerated and any team that does this will be suspended from play with no reimbursement of fees to the players or honorarium to the coach.
Coaches that have practices in the elementary gyms are also asked, by the Public School Board Rental Division, to have a parent check the school hallways during the scheduled practice time to make sure there is nobody wandering the school without permission.
Teams must vacate the gyms at the time indicated on the practice schedules. If there are complaints from schools you could lose your practice time.

For new coaches:
You might want to meet with the parents at the first practice and explain what you will be doing during the course of the program. With6 practices you will not be able to develop much team oriented play but should be able to help out players with minor skill development problems. If you need any advice, please contact me.

You might want to make up a phoning list and a phoning tree for the team and give it to the parents when you meet with them for the first time. This will help them with car-pooling and time or gym changes that may occur at the last minute.
Please read over the information posted on the web site for coaches. If you have any questions do not hesitate to contact me.
